Ma Hezhi, a painter in the Southern Song Dynasty, was proficient at drawing landscapes and characters. Among his extant works, Album of Paintings on the Book of Filial Piety is the most famous. The Book of Filial Piety, a classic Confucian work, records dialogues between Confucius and his discipleson filial piety. The text in this album is transcribed by Zhao Gou, Emperor Gaozong of the Song Dynasty, while the paintings are attributed to Ma Hezhi. There are a total of 15 paintings in the album, including contents of emperor, feuds and ministers. With numerous scenes and concise structure, it is a top quality figure painting work in the Song Dynasty. This book only selects the first, third and fourth piece.
