The Indian Who Could Foretell the WeatherTwo men were travelling in a very wild and lonely part of America．For days they had not even seen a house，only a few huts made of wood，or tents made of skins．Then one day they met an old Indian who earned his living by trapping animals for heir fur．They found that he knew their language and they had a little conversation with him．One of them asked him if he could tell them what the weather would be like within the next few days．“Oh yes，”he said．“Rain is coming，and wind．Then there will be snow for two days，but after that there will be bright sunshine．”
“Isn’t that wonderful？”said one man to his friend．“These old Indians know more of the secrets of Nature than we do with all our science．They have not been spoiled by civilization．”Then he turned to the old Indian．“Tell me，”he said，“how you knew all that．”
The Indian replied，“I heard it on the radio．”

Coffee Without Cream
Jean was a very beautiful young girl，so she was quite used to some men showingtheir admirationadmiration for her，and to others-being confused and shy when they saw her.
One summer，when Jean was travelling abroad，she went into a cafe in a smalltown，sat down and waited to be served.
The young waiter was talking to someoneat the bar when she came in，and at first he did not pay any attention to her，because he had not looked at her properly.Then he turned round and saw how beautiful she was.His face went bright red，and he hurried over to take her order.
“I‘d like coffee without cream，please.
“Jean said.
The waiter hurried out，and came back afew minutes later without the coffee.
“I’m very sorry，”he said，“but we haven‘t got any cream.Would you like your coffee without milk？”

Mr．Day was a teacher at a school in a big city in the north of England．He usually went to France or Germany for a few weeks during his summer holidays，and he spoke French and German quite well．But one year Mr．Day said to one of his friends，“I’m going to have a holiday in Athens．But I don’t speak Greek，so I’ll go to evening classes and have Greek lessons for a month before I go．”
He studied very hard for a month，and then his holidays began and he went to Greece．When he came back a few weeks later，his friend said to him，“Did you have any trouble with your Greek when you were in Athens，Dick？”
“No，I didn’t have any trouble with it．”answered Mr．Day．“But the Greeks did！”

Once there was an extremely miserly manwho，during his travels，came to a river that was flooding.Since he wasn‘t willing to pay the ferryman to make the crossing，he decided to walk across it himself.With great effort he got to the middle of the river when the flooding waterwashed him more than half a li downstream.
His son，standing on the bank，seeing his father drowning，looked for someone to save his life.The ferryman asked fora qian （5grams）of silver，the son onlyagreed to give him five fen （half a qian）；they haggledhaggle with each other relentlesslyrelentlessly.
The man was nearly drowned，but his head struggled out of the water in desperation.“My son，ah，my son！Let him save my life for five fen.Don’t agree on a qian！”the man yelled to his son.
In the end he drowned in the waves.

Six People were travelling in a compartmentcompartment on a train.Five of them were quietand well behaved，but the other was a rude young man who was causing a lot of trouble to the other passengers.
At last this young man got out at a station with his two heavy bags.None of the other passengers helped him，but one of them waited until the rude young man was very far away，and then opened the window and shouted to him，“You left something behind in the compartment！”Then heclosed the window again.
The young man turned around and hurriedback with his two bags.He was very tired when he arrived，but he shouted through the window，“what did I leave behind？”
As the train began to move again，the passenger who had called him back openedthe window and said，“A very bad impression！”
