King of the State Xia ordered his men to set up a small target with an even smaller bull’s eye. He said to Hou Yi, “Now, you will shoot the bull’s eye. If you shoot it, I will bestow you a lot of money, and if you miss the target, I will deprive you of a lot of your feud.” Hearing the order, Hou Yi became very nervous. His chest fluctuated and his breathing became very restless. Hou Yi started to shoot at the target. He missed the target with the first arrow, and missed the target again with the second arrow.
King of the State Xia asked Mi Ren, an official that educated in the royalty, “Hou Yi has never missed the target in the past. But this time, he missed the target twice. Why?”
Mi Ren answered, “During the shooting just now, the mood of joy and horror ruined him, and the prospect of the award money has become the disaster. If everybody can throw away the psychological burden of joy and horror, and leave the heavy bestowment behind, everybody in the world will become great marksmen.”
