The youth wandered on，and after some time came to a fortress(fortress n.堡垒，要塞)where he begged for a night"s lodging.“Yes，”said the lord of the castle，“if you will pass the night down there in the old tower，go thither，but I warn you，it is at the peril(peril n.危险)of your life，for it is full of wild dogs，which bark(bark v.吠，咆哮，剥树皮)and howl(howl v.嚎叫，怒吼，嚎啕大哭，喝住，号叫)without stopping，and at certain hours a man has to be given to them，whom they at once devour.”The whole district was in sorrow and dismay(dismay n.沮丧，惊慌)because of them，and yet no one could do anything to stop this.The youth，however，was without fear，and said，“Just let me go down to the barking dogs，and give me something that I can throw to them，they will do nothing to harm me.”As he himself would have it so，they gave him some food for the wild animals，and led him down to the tower.When he went inside，the dogs did not bark at him，but wagged(wag vt.摇摆，摇动，饶舌)their tails quite amicably(amicably adv.友善地)around him，ate what he set before them，and did not hurt one hair of his head.Next morning，to the astonishment of everyone，he came out again safe and unharmed(unharmed adj.未受伤害的，太太平平的)，and said to the lord of the castle，“The dogs have revealed to me，in their own language，why they dwell(dwell vi.居住，踌躇)there，and bring evil on the land.They are bewitched(bewitch vt.施魔法于，蛊惑，迷人)，and are obliged to watch over a great treasure which is below in the tower，and they can have no rest until it is taken away，and I have likewise learnt，from their discourse(discourse n.演讲，论述，论文，讲道，谈话，谈论)，how that is to be done.”Then all who heard this rejoiced，and the lord of the castle said he would adopt him as a son if he accomplished it successfully.He went down again，and as he knew what he had to do，he did it thoroughly(thoroughly adv.十分地，彻底地)，and brought a chest full of gold out with him.The howling of the wild dogs was henceforth(henceforth adv.自此以后，今后)heard no more，they had disappeared，and the country was freed from the trouble.
小伙子无目的地往前走，过了一些时候来到一座城堡前，请求在那儿投宿。“行啊，”城堡的主人说，“你要是乐意在那座古塔里过夜，就请便吧，不过我警告你，当心你的小命，因为那里边到处是野狗，它们一个劲儿地狂吠乱叫，过几个钟头就得丢一个人给它们，它们立刻把他吃掉！”整个地区的人都为这事叫苦连天，可是谁都毫无办法。小伙子呢，却毫无畏惧，说：“让我去野狗那儿好啦，只是得给我些东西，让我一开始就扔给它们。它们不会伤我一根毫毛的。”既然他非去不可，人家就给他一些野狗吃的东西，把他带到了古塔跟前，他走进塔去，那些狗没冲他吠叫，反倒围着他很友好地摇摆尾巴，吃掉了他扔给它们的东西，一根毫毛也没碰他的。第二天早上，他安然无恙地走回去，令所有人都大吃一惊。他对城堡主人说：“那些狗用它们的语言告诉我，它们为什么聚集在那儿，给本地造成祸害。原来呀它们是中了魔法，不得不在那儿守护埋在塔楼底下的一宗财宝。只有把财宝取走了，它们才安静得下来。而取财宝的惟一办法，我同样从它们的话里明白了。”大伙儿听了都很高兴，城堡主人说愿意收他做义子，要是他把事情办成功了的话。小伙子于是又爬进下边的钟楼，他知道怎么彻低取出那只装满黄金的柜子。从此再听不见野狗的吠叫声，它们突然间便无踪无影，地方上也免除了祸患。
After some time he took it into his head that he would travel to Rome.On the way he passed by a marsh(marsh n.湿地，沼泽，沼泽地)，in which a number of frogs were sitting croaking.He listened to them，and when he became aware of what they were saying，he grew very thoughtful and sad.At last he arrived in Rome，where the Pope had just died，and there was great doubt among the cardinals(cardinal n.枢机主教，红衣主教)as to whom they should appoint as his successor(successor n.继承者，接任者，后续的事物).They at length agreed that the person should be chosen as Pope who should be distinguished by some divine(divine adj.神的，神圣的，非凡的，超人的，非常可爱的)and miraculous(miraculous adj.奇迹的，不可思议的)token.And just as that was decided on，the young count entered into the church，and suddenly two snowwhite doves flew on his shoulders and remained sitting there.The ecclesiastics(ecclesiastic n.神职者，教会，牧师)recognized therein the token from above，and asked him on the spot if he would be Pope.He was undecided，and knew not if he were worthy of this，but the doves counselled him to do it，and at length he said yes.Then was he anointed(anoint vt.涂以油或软膏，施以涂油礼)and consecrated(consecrate vt.用作祭祀，献给，使神圣)，and thus was fulfilled what he had heard from the frogs on his way，which had so affected him，that he was to be his holiness(holiness n.神圣)the Pope.Then he had to sing a mass，and did not know one word of it，but the two doves sat continually on his shoulders，and said it all in his ear.
过了一段时间，小伙子心血来潮，想去罗马。途中，他经过一片沼泽，看见有一些青蛙蹲在里边呱呱呱叫。他听他们说什么，明白了它们话里的意思，一下子变得心事重重，难过起来。终于，他到了罗马，正碰上教皇死了，大主教们拿不定主意，不知定谁做他的继承人好。最后他们一致同意，要选那个上帝在他身上显了圣迹的人当新教皇。就在作出这个决定的一刹那，年轻的伯爵刚好跨进教堂，突然飞来两只雪白的鸽子，落下来一直蹲在他的两边肩上。教士们断定这就是上帝的圣迹，当场问他愿不愿意当教皇。小伙子犹豫不决，不知道配不配做此事，两边肩上的鸽子却劝他做，他最后才同意了。接着，他便行了涂油礼，接受了加冕。这样，他在途中听青蛙说的那些令他大为震惊的话，就应了验，他做了神圣的教皇。随后，他必须唱弥撒了，却一个字也不知道，好在那两只鸽子一直蹲在他左右两肩上，在他耳朵旁边告诉他一切。
