What looked funniest was the Dogs. During the gallop hey had not been at all out of breath， but now， as they warmed and wrig gled upwards， there was plenty of pluttering and sneezing among them； that was because hey would keep on barking， and every time they barked hey got their mouths and noses full of water. But before ll had time to notice all these things fully， she was going p the Waterfall herself. It was the sort of thing that would ave been quite impossible in our world. Even if you hadn‘t een drowned， you would have been smashed to pieces y the terrible weight of water against the countless jags f rock. But in that world you could do it. You went on， p and up， with all kinds of reflected lights flashing at you om the water and all manner of coloured stones flashing hrough it， till it seemed as if you were climbing up light self.and always higher and higher till the sense of height ould have terrified you if you could be terrified， but later was only gloriously exciting. And then at last one came to he lovely， smooth green curve in which the water poured ver the top and found that one was out on the level river bove the Waterfall. The current was racing away behind ou， but you were such a wonderful swimmer that you could ake headway against it. Soon they were all on the bank， ripping but happy.

失怙孤女范菊英与穷学生秦朴相爱，但双方都经济拮据，生计无着。菊英的叔父嫌贫爱富，不愿她与秦朴结合。阔少章绍杰垂涎菊英美貌，玩弄手段，引她上钩，同居之后又另求新欢。菊英遭遗弃后，又被叔父骗卖到郑州为娼，受尽苦难，幸遇在北京时的邻居二秃子，仗义相救，送回北京。菊英虽然跳出火坑，但已身染二期痨疾。秦朴从上海赶来相见，表示无论发生什幺变化，对她的爱永远不变，但菊英已不堪承受重新到来的爱情，她的“心病”虽因秦朴的到来而得到治疗，“身病”却日益严重。“春光一天一天的老去”，落絮扑天，柳丝拂地，然而秦朴回到上海之后寄给菊英的信，已经永远没有收信人了。“虽然还是春天的北京，但已不像处女那般美丽了”。
